Keeping Us Safe

In this age of terror attacks, bio-terrorism, and the like. It’s comforting to know our elected officials are working hard to protect us and maintain the peace. In fact, I’d have to say that we’ve no lack of protective services in place should an emergency arise. Perhaps it’s a life or death matter or issue of national security? We can rest assured the billions of dollars collected from our pockets every year is being put to good use.

Yes indeed, we’re certainly fortunate that so many are working tirelessly to keep us safe from the ravages of villainous criminals. Consider, for example, this story.

How dare these two young girls, 11 and 3 respectively, defy a government ordinance? Why, there should be a law against such nefarious behavior! Call our Congressmen; call Barak and John; add this to our party platforms; justice must be served!

I know, the style of this post is over the top; I agree.

Still, I think it aptly illustrates the absurdity of this particular situation.

Moreover, I find it indicative of our national government; rather the current state of our national government. We, as a society, seem to have accepted the wholesale legislation of our everyday lives. Whether local, as in this case, or national in scope; government has the answer. Another law, a different government sponsored, read tax-payer funded, program. That’s all that’s missing. The big-name presidential candidates are debating daily on what ‘legislation’ they’ll provide to make our lives better.

More legislation will, in my view, only provoke more ridiculous examples of government run amok. At some point, “we the people”, must exercise reason and common sense. We’ll never get that from our elected officials until we start exercising it ourselves. That starts in the voting booth.

I’m not telling you who to vote for. However, we need to take a close look at those running for any office. What are their plans? How will they affect this highly touted “change.” More legislation, more governmental control/oversight and less personal freedom and responsibility? If so, think of these two little girls and their lemonade stand and ask yourself; at what price change?
